Habitat Prince Edward Island

Lennox Island

Participate in an Indigenous Housing Partnership whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

August 3rd - August 10th 2019

In the Summer of 2018, Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island and Lennox Island First Nation entered into a memorandum of understanding to bring our model of homeownership to the territory. No new homes have been constructed there since 2013. The plan is to build five homes over the next three years.

Lennox Island is geographically unique and particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change. Terrain there is low lying and mostly marsh. Habitat PEI is working with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) as well as Habitat Canada who has connected them with the University of Waterloo to explore the possibility of building easily expandable houses.

The largest demographic in need of housing is single men - Lennox Island's housing policy has an order of precedence: 1. Two parent families 2. Single parent families 3. Single women 4. Single men. As a result, Habitat PEI is looking to build a relatively small home to begin with, but one that can be adapted to meet the needs of a growing family.

Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island

Founded in 1996, Habitat for Humanity PEI is a nonprofit organization working towards an Island where everyone has an opportunity to live in a safe, decent and affordable home. With the help of generous volunteers, the local Habitat has provided 67 families with safe, decent and affordable housing throughout Prince Edward Island. Their largest developments include an area of Hillsborough Park and a subdivision in Harrington. The various projects will focus on families living with disabilities, Canadian Forces veterans, refugees, and families traditionally left out of the housing market.

Team Leader

Prince Edward Island has been known by many different names… Abegweit, Cradle on the Waves, Ile St. Jean, Garden of the Gulf… regardless of the name; it will always be the island I grew up on.

My name is Ken and since 2007 I have been on 12 Global Village trips throughout Canada, and internationally. This will be my fourth as Team Leader. All are rewarding experiences!

I am happy to be going to Lennox Island First Nation for this inaugural build, and I hope you will be interested in joining us as we experience “The Island” way of life, coming together for a week of culture, history, food, and yes, construction. All this while working side by side with local peoples, providing a “hand up” to a deserving family and community.
