When will new trips be posted on the trip schedule?

Trips are generally posted on the Global Village website 5 to 7 months before the trip dates. Keep checking the trip schedule for updates on teams departing within that time frame.

Are there any age restrictions to participating on a Global Village trip?

Persons under 18 years of age are permitted to participate on a Global Village team only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or traveling with an institution such as a school or church (see below). There is no age limit for seniors provided they have no health issues which may impede their participation.

Can children participate on a Global Village trip?

Many families desire an opportunity to volunteer together. Since volunteering for Habitat for Humanity Canada involves working on a construction site, there are restrictions for safety reasons. Youth must be 15 years of age to participate on a Global Village team in most locations.  In Canada, USA & Europe, volunteers must be 16 years of age.  

My school group (or church group, etc.) would like to go on a Global Village trip. How should we get started?

If you represent an organized group wishing to plan a Global Village trip, please contact us at globalvillage@habitat.ca and we will put you in contact with a GV Team Coordinator to begin your planning. Your team leader does not need to be previously trained by Global Village.

What experience is required to go on a Global Village trip?

No special construction skills are required just a desire to help,and enthusiasm for meeting new people and learning about their culture.

What type of work do volunteers do?

Habitat homes in tropical countries are often made of concrete brick or block. The team will work with the homeowners and trained construction supervisors.  The work often includes digging, mixing, concrete, carrying and laying bricks.  There is a job for everyone, no matter your experience or abilities.

What if I want to volunteer for longer than 2 weeks?

Global Village builds are short term projects, usually 10 days to 2 weeks in length.  The International Volunteer Program is designed for people wishing to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity for 3 to 24 months. This program is offered through Habitat for Humanity International, based in Americus, Georgia, USA. For more information go to www.habitat.org/ivp.

Is there a cost to participating on a Global Village build?

Yes. GV trip costs depend on the country visited, the Habitat host affiliate and the number of trip days.  All trip costs include room and board, in-country transportation, travel insurance and a donation toward the Habitat host community's building projects and the Global Village program.  Trip costs are approximately $1500 - $2500 (not including airfare) depending on the destination and length.  Airfare, cancellation insurance and baggage fees are not included in the cost.  Charitable donation receipts will be issued for all eligible trip contributions.

What expenses will qualify for tax receipts?

If you are Canadian and are participating on a Global Village trip offered through Habitat for Humanity Canada many of your trip expenses will be eligible for a tax receipt. This includes the donation to the building program of the country you are visiting and to the Global Village Canada program, your medical insurance, and your travel, food and lodging while on the build in the host country. Eligible airfare costs can also receive a tax receipt.  You will receive specific information regarding tax receipts once you are accepted to a team. 
No tax receipts are issued for costs associated with R&R (rest and relaxation) activities, or travel preparations such as passports or vaccinations. No tax receipts are issued for trips offered through Habitat for Humanity International.

Can I fund-raise for my Global Village trip costs?

Yes, you can. Many of our participants have successfully raised funds for the some or all of the costs of the Global Village trip. Fundraising in your community is an exciting way to promote awareness of the need for decent, affordable housing in many parts of the world. What if I sign up for a trip, but have to cancel?

We are not able to refund money paid or donated by donors if you need to cancel your participation on a Global Village trip. Depending on when you withdraw, we are able to hold your funds, less an administrative fee, for a future Global Village trip. When you are confirmed as a participant on a Global Village team you will receive a copy of the Payment and Cancellation policy
