Vietnam

May 20-29, 2017

Do you enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures firsthand?  Do you like meeting new people and having fun?  Do you enjoy working as a team and learning new things?  Would you like to help a well deserving family to have adequate, safe and affordable housing?

Then this trip to Vietnam in May 2017 is for you!  No previous construction experience is required. Just a willing, enthusiastic attitude and a desire to have fun while learning local building practices is all that is needed. We have a place on our team for all skill levels.

I am looking for team members who are positive, adventurous, flexible, and culturally sensitive with a good sense of humor. If you seek an exciting and challenging trip and have a desire to be part of a community while enjoying local culture and hospitality and accomplishing something worthwhile, then we want you on this trip!

We will be travelling to Quang Nam, Vietnam where we will be helping to provide a family with safe, affordable housing.

Why should I travel to Vietnam?Image result for map of vietnam

Vietnam is a country in which more than 10% of people live below the poverty line.  Low income families are trapped in cycles of living in inadequate housing needing continual repairs.  The country is experiencing rapid growth and there is a great need to help provide adequate housing for families.

Tell me about Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Vietnam began helping to provide housing solutions in Vietnam in 2001, and has helped over 13,300 families to build, upgrade and repair their homes. Families contribute “sweat equity” into their homes, and repay the costs through microfinance loans. Habitat for Humanity Vietnam partners with international volunteers, as well as local government and communities. International volunteers contribute their time and labor to build alongside the local community in Vietnam.

                                                                      Where will I be working?
We will be working in the Quang Nam region of Vietnam.  Quang Nam is located in the central coastal region of Vietnam, and is among one of the poorest regions and is often affected by disasters.  HFH Vietnam aims to build resilience to natural disasters and climate change through housing solutions and community based disaster mitigation training.  Habitat also helps families to improve their health through clean water and safe sanitation.

What type of work will I do?
Volunteer tasks vary depending on the stage of construction when the team arrives.  Typical activities may include mixing concrete and mortar, pouring concrete, tying rebar, splitting concrete blocks, laying blocks, or whatever else is needed.

Meet The Team Leader: Rick

My name is Rick Belland and I will be leading this trip to Vietnam. I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity for five years through volunteering both locally in Edmonton, and as either a participant or team leader on trips to Costa Rica, Portugal, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago.

I am a retired City of Edmonton Fire Captain where I worked for 30 years. I have always enjoyed travel and love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. Through HFH, I have met many lifelong friends, and have had experiences I would not have had otherwise. Now that I am retired, I have the time to follow my passion to travel, learn firsthand about other cultures, and to lend a hand to others so that they may obtain safe, affordable, and adequate housing.

I look forward to this exciting adventure to Vietnam and meeting all of you who would like to join me by being part of this team.
