Amarante, Portugal

July 16 -  24, 2017

Join us as we work together to help a family achieve their dream of a safe and affordable home of their own, while we take in the rich culture of Portugal.

Tell me about Habitat Portugal
Located between Spain to the east and north and the Atlantic ocean to the west, Portugal covers an area about the size of Maine and also includes the islands of Madeira and the Azores. The country has a population of almost 11 million with about three-fifths living in urban areas. We will travel to the Porto region in the north, home to the Douro River Valley which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region thanks to a blockade during one of Britain’s squabbles with France in the 18th century. To spite the French, British traders sailed past France to Portugal, where Portuguese vintners readied their red wine for the long trip back to London by stabilizing it with brandy, creating what we now know as port.

Habitat for Humanity has been working in northern Portugal since 1996 with a focus on upgrading and rehabilitating existing homes in an area where unemployment and low income are prevalent and where as much as 65% of the population lives in dilapidated housing.

What will I be doing?
The town of Amarante with a population of 56,000, located northeast of Porto is where we will work, assisting with home improvements or expansions, or finishing a partially constructed home. There will be a variety of work waiting for us that may include anything from building foundations and walls to plastering, painting and tile work.

                                        What Will It Cost?

This  9 day opportunity to build in Portugal will cost approximately
$2040 +  round-trip airfare  +  $200 for R&R*

The trip cost includes:  lodging, food, ground transportation, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Portugal and the Global Village program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Porto, Portugal. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you. These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet The Team Leader: Kelly Squier

Hi there!.  My name is Kelly Squier and I'm a Program Coordinator with Habitat for Humanity Canada's Global Village Program, though I'm currently on maternity leave.  This will be my 4th Global Village trip and 2nd time leading.

I'm hoping to put together a diverse team of flexible, compassionate and adaptable individuals. Habitat Builds are not just about building homes but working alongside the local community to learn and embrace our different cultures.  Bring your sense of humour and an open mind and you won't be disappointed!
