Vancouver Island

June 11 - 18, 2017

Celebrate Canada's 150th by building a home for a family!

Would you like to travel on a life changing experience, explore the beauty of Vancouver Island while rolling up your sleeves to make a difference in the lives of families right here in Canada?  If so, this trip is for you!  No previous building experience is required.  The only requisites are a flexible attitude, the desire to work hard and be a contributing member of the team.

Why should I consider a build on Vancouver Island?

Surrounded by the Northern Mountain ranges, discovery passage waterways, rivers, lakes, and streams Vancouver Island is a majestic place to visit. Campbell River has had to endure a lot of changes over the past few years. Mines and mills have closed down and logging has changed which has hurt the community of Campbell River.  Housing prices have skyrocketed leaving many people struggling to find affordable housing.

Where will I stay? What will I eat?
The hotel will be simple and basic, but comfortable and includes a hot breakfast. Expect to share a room with at least one other team member. Lunch will be taken on the build site and dinner at local restaurants.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 8 day opportunity to build on Vancouver Island is approximately
$1,670 + round-trip airfare

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Vancouver Island North and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Campbell River, Vancouver Island. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue two separate charitable donation tax receipts: 1) for the Habitat trip fee; and 2) one for the eligible airfare (the airfare related tax receipt is issued after the trip).

Meet the Team Leader: Kat

Hello everyone! My name is Kat de Ocampo and I could not be more excited to finally be leading a build here in Canada. In 2008 I participated on my first GV Build to Guatemala, and I have been hooked ever since. Following my first build, I ended up working with Habitat Guatemala for 3 years as the Hosting coordinator. Since returning to Canada, I have worked as a Sending Coordinator for GV teams traveling to the Asia Pacific region, and I have led teams to Indonesia, Hawaii and Chile. Having done a handful of builds abroad, I think it is about time I lead a trip here in Canada. I am looking to put together a diverse group of individuals who want to travel with a purpose. Habitat Builds are not just about building houses, but working alongside the locals to learn and embrace our diversity. If you love to travel and be part of a team, are up for some hard work while getting your hands a bit dirty, I would love to hear from you!
