Nadi, Fiji

November 18 - 29, 2017

Build a home for a deserving family in Fiji!

Why should I go to Fiji?

Fiji is a mountainous island nation located south of the equator in the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji is known for its lush tropical rainforests, coconut plantations, beautiful white sandy beaches, and majestic coral reefs. With a total population of less than one million, only about 100 of its 332 islands are inhabited. Nadi, located on the island of Viti Levu, is one of the largest towns in Fiji. It is the country's main transportation hub, and is known for its cultural diversity.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity Fiji

Approximately 31% of Fijians live below the poverty line. HFH Fiji was founded in 1991. Anchored by the conviction that housing provides a path out of poverty, HFH Fiji has assisted more than 28,600 people in Fiji and the Pacific. As of 2015, HFH Fiji has helped over 3400 families through disaster relief response, improved the water and sanitation facilities in more than 47 communities with 1400 families, and has built over 900 new homes. HFH Fiji homes are constructed with concrete blocks or timber, replacing traditional bamboo, woven mat, and dirt floor homes which do not withstand the rainy season.

Where will I stay? What will I eat?

The team will stay in shared rooms in a modest, secure, clean HFH Fiji-approved hotel near the build site. Meals will be in approved restaurants or prepared by Habitat-authorized local community members. Clean drinking water will be provided at all times. Health and safety of the team is always top priority.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 12 day opportunity to build in Fiji is approximately
$2,160 + round-trip airfare to Nadi + approx $450 for R&R*

The trip cost includes: lodging, food, ground transportation, traveller’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH China and the Global Village program.  Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Nadi, Fiji. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you. These costs are not tax deductible.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts. The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

Meet the Team Leader: John Roe

My name is John Roe and I live in Mississauga.   I have been privileged over the last 10 years to lead multiple GV trips around the world.  Whether you are new to HFH Canada Global Village or are a seasoned GV veteran, I would like to invite you join me in Fiji this November as we work together to eliminate poverty housing

I am looking for a team of hard working, easy-going, fun-loving, go-with-the-flow people who want to make a difference in a deserving family's life.

In my experience working alongside partner families and local skilled tradesmen affords an uncommon opportunity to appreciate what daily life is like in other parts of the world.  Believe me, you will find that you will gain more than you give!  No previous construction experience is necessary --  just an open mind, a willingness to help and a readiness to share a good laugh.

Please feel free to contact me at johnroe@rogers.com if you would like to learn more about this trip or apply now using our on-line application.

Because of the time HFH Fiji needs to plan and prepare to host our team, applications for this build must be received by September 8, 2017.

Looking forward to sharing a wonderfully rewarding experience with you!  - John
