September 23 October 7, 2017

Zambia is a land-locked country in southern Africa known for its friendly people, rich culture and spectacular wildlife. The capital city, Lusaka, has a population of 1.7 million. The official language is English, while many local languages are spoken, including Nyanja (spoken in Lusaka) Bemba and 72 other indigenous languages. While rich in culture, Zambia is one of the least developed nations, and one of its poorest, ranking 165 out of 177. Unemployment is high. 60-percent of the population resides in remote areas where housing is critical. Families are often crowded into a single room and children are threatened by a life-threatening environment. Poor living conditions feed a cycle of poverty that continues to disempower vulnerable families.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia was formed in 1985, first operating in Chanyanya in the Kafue Flats. HFH Zambia offers interest-free home mortgage loans to those who qualify. Homes are built of cement blocks with stone foundations and cement tile roofs.

Costs:

The cost for this 16 day opportunity to build in Zambia is
$2870 + plus round-trip airfare + approximately $600 for R&R (more details to follow).

Trip costs include lodging, food, ground transportation in Zambia, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials and a donation to HFH Zambia and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure city. Flight consultations must be made in consultation with the Team Leaders.

Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and eligible air fare – these will be 2 separate receipts. The costs for the R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leaders will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leaders will discuss with you. These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leaders:

My name is David Meadows and I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am a retired lawyer and I am married with one grown son. I have travelled widely through Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Latin America, Japan and Israel and have been travelling with Global Village teams since 2008 to such countries as El Salvador, Kenya, and Mozambique. Most recently, I led a 'Canada Builds' team to the Yukon and a Global Village team to Jordan. When not travelling, I love reading, golfing, gardening and, oh yes, the Blue Jays.

I am Nancy Hamel.  I live in beautiful Mill River, P.E.I.  I am a program instructor with Tremploy, Inc.  I am married and I have one grown daughter.  I have travelled widely through Europe...plus several countries around our beautiful planet.  I have been to Africa 3x, South East Asia, South America and OZ and NZ.  I have also travelled with Global Village since 2007 and a leader since 2008.
