San Vicente - El Salvador

November 25 - December 3, 2017

Christmas in Action!

Hello & Bonjour! Do you want to travel aboard and make a difference? Here is an opportunity to do both! Become a Global Village Team Member and join us on our “Christmas in Action Blitz” build in El Salvador. As team members of the Habitat for Humanity Canada’s Global Village Program, we will have numerous opportunities to befriend and work alongside a local build crew  and future homeowners. With other Canadians and other international GV volunteers, together, we will experience that it is in sharing your time and resources that we receive back hundredfold. We are looking for volunteers with a positive attitude and flexibility, eager to work alongside a family in need.

Christmas in Action Blitz Build
What better time to offer the best of yourself: your precious time and talent, moreover, your spirit of joyful and generous giving. As a community-building project, Christmas in Action 2017 seeks to facilitate the friendly coming together of  all partners. To that end, international volunteers  will be encouraged to work alongside local partners and volunteers from other countries. They will  participate in the local festivities, social events and community service activities alongside community members and local church partners, wrapped up with a Gala Dinner to close off the event. Our  build will be located in San Vicente. San Vincente is a smaller city of 50K+ and is situated in the central area of the country. Some of the options for GV volunteers and visitors include: visiting surrounding towns, trekking up a volcano, or rest and relaxation a nearby beach.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity El Salvador

El Salvador is located in Central America, bordered by Guatemala to the west, Honduras to the north and east and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It is a country of mind-boggling diversity: mountain cloud forests, volcanoes, charming colonial towns, broad green valleys, black-sand beaches and warmly proud and friendly people. With a population of just over 6 million, the country has been working hard to rebuild itself since the civil war ended in 1992.

El Salvador's geographical position makes it subject to severe natural disasters, including heavy rainstorms, hurricanes, volcanic activity and earthquakes. Hence, there is a large need for decent housing in both rural and urban areas. Habitat for Humanity El Salvador has helped families in El Salvador since 1992. After being struck by recent natural disasters, the housing need increased rapidly in the country, both in urban and rural areas. Of the total number of houses affected, 60 percent corresponded to homes with an income of up to two minimum wages. *One monthly minimum wage in El Salvador is about $180.00 CAD. A family earning two minimum wages would have a monthly household  income of $360. 00 CAD.

What will my week look like?

Saturday November 25: Team Arrives in San Salvador

Monday November 27 - December 1: Build Days
(Team may have cultural activities scheduled during the week)

Saturday December 2: R&R Day

Sunday December 3: Depart for home or continue travels independently

(please note that the above itinerary may be subject to change)

Where will I stay? What will I eat?

Habitat El Salvador will determine the best lodging for our group of volunteers. Teams usually stay in hotels or retreat centers that are basic, safe and clean. Typically 2-4 people per room, sometimes dorm-style accommodations.

Breakfast may  be taken at the hotel, lunch at the build site and dinner at local restaurants. Snacks and water will be provided at the worksite.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 9 day opportunity to build in El Salvador  is approximately
$1,770.00 + round-trip airfare + $ 180 CAD for R&R

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH El Salvador  and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to San Salvador. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leader: Bernadette Levesque

My name is Bernadette. I was born and raised in Northern Alberta: in the beautiful Region of Peace River. I live in a small francophone town called Falher. Until last year, my husband and I owned and operated a grain/oilseed farm. We produced high quality wheat, and some of the best low trans-fat canola oil in the Prairies. Presently, it is our son and his wife who have embraced the the vocation of growing healthy and wholesome food. They are now the fourth generation farmers of our family farm enterprise. My passion is studying: learning within classroom settings and through in-the-field discoveries! I’ve completed a Conflict Leadership Program, and hope to begin a new part-time career as a family mediator. Without the responsibilities of farming, I’m now eager to travel and befriend new people, experience different cultures, learn and be challenged by different global perspectives.
I’ve been on several GV builds: in New Zealand, Ethiopia, Cambodia, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. In January 2016, as a team leader, I led a group in El Salvador. This will be my third build in  El Salvador.  With other like-minded people, I look forward, to be involved in many more Global Village projects whereby, we can contribute in bettering the world, one home, and one family at a time. Please feel free to contact me at murdle@telusplanet.net I look forward to meeting you all.
