                                                         Quetzaltenango Guatemala

March 10-18, 2018

Do you enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures firsthand?  Do you like meeting new people and having fun?  Do you enjoy working as a team and learning new things?  Would you like to help a well deserving family to have adequate, safe and affordable housing?

Then this trip to Guatemala in March 2018 is for you!  No previous construction experience is required.  Just a willing, enthusiastic attitude and a desire to have fun while learning local building practices is all that is needed.  We have a place on our team for all skill levels.

I am looking for team members who are positive, adventurous, flexible, and culturally sensitive with a good sense of humor.  If you seek an exciting and challenging trip and have a desire to be part of a community while enjoying local culture and hospitality and accomplishing something rewarding, then we want you on this trip!

Why should I go to Guatemala?

According to the Central American Association for Housing, the housing deficit in Guatemala exceeds 1.6 million households, including dilapidated, rented and overcrowded housing. To this is also added the need for basic services such as potable water, sanitation, electricity, and the fact that many families still cook with open fires in rural areas.

Families live in extreme poverty, often making under $2 per day. Most families work in agriculture and depend on the success of their crops.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 9 day opportunity to build in Quetzaltenango is approximately

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Guatemala and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Guatemala CityFlight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leader: Bill Houlden

Hello, thanks for considering a trip to Guatemala to give a family a hand up. This will be my 9th project with Habitat for Humanity and 6th as a team leader. This is my third trip to Guatemala, back to where this great journey began. These builds are amazing experiences, creating memories that you will carry for the rest of your life. Watching the impact these builds have on the families (and the team members) is amongst the most rewarding experiences I have encountered. Please consider joining my team, the location of this build affords some visits to “the places you want to see” while in this beautiful country.

Please feel free to contact me at houlden.bill@gmail.com  if you would like to learn more about this trip or apply now using our on-line application!
