                                                         Dominican Republic

                                                                February 10 - February 18, 2017

Are you looking for a way to make a tangible difference in someone else’s life? Then come give a family in the Dominican Republic a hand up by helping them build a safe and affordable home. This is the trip for you if you like to travel off the beaten path, experience new cultures and meet new friends while having lots of fun. No experience needed; just an open mind, a sense of adventure and a willingness to work to the best of your ability. A sense of humour and a positive attitude would also be appreciated.

Why should I go to the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic is a tropical paradise that is known for its beaches, baseball, merengue music and creole cuisine. The capital city, Santo Domingo, was founded in 1498 and it is home to the first cathedral, hospital and university in the Americas. It is also a very poor country and many people in the rural areas suffer from severe poverty and housing shortages. Many of the existing houses don’t have access to running water, they have dirt floors that create health risks and they are poorly constructed from salvaged materials. The total housing deficit in the DR is estimated to be more than 1,000,000 units. Unfortunately the Dominican Republic’s location and geography make it ripe for natural disasters such as hurricanes, tropical storms, landslides and earthquakes which all cause a threat to those in substandard housing.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic.

Habitat for Humanity has operated in the Dominican Republic since 1986. HfH Dominican Republic has provided housing solutions to more than 7000 families during this time. In 2016 they helped 133 families by providing them with homes that have affordable low interest mortgages.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 8 day opportunity to build in (Dominican Republic) is approximately

$1,895 + round-trip airfare +$300 for R&R

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Dominican Republic and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leader: Dana Farnell

I am ecstatic to be leading this trip to the Dominican Republic. This will be my 13th build in five years with Global Village. I am also a Volunteer Crew Leader with Habitat Southern Alberta where I help to build homes four days a week in Calgary. Previously I have travelled with GV to the Yukon, New Orleans, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala (2x) and Nicaragua (6x). Travelling, working and being immersed in the communities and cultures of Central America have changed the way I see the world. Through these trips I have made some great friends around the world while laughing, learning, sweating and having lots of fun. Please join me on this new adventure!
