Tela Bay, Honduras

April 7 - 15, 2018

About Honduras:

Honduras is  located in Central America, bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Guatemala and Nicaragua and bordering the Gulf of Fonseca, between El Salvador and Nicaragua.  Honduras is known for its rich Mesoamerican culture, abundance of fresh and delicious tropical fruits, chocolate and coffee. The lush green mountains and long Caribbean coast contribute to the beauty of this country. The warmth and vibrance of the Honduran people in combination with land's natural beauty make Honduras a must-visit country.

The Housing Need in Honduras

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America with more than half of its 9,000,000+ population living in poverty. The housing need is great - the Inter-American Development Bank says that the housing deficit in Honduras is around 57%, out of which 350,000 new homes are required, while approximately 770,000 homes require improvement of some kind.

Habitat for Humanity in Honduras

In 1989, Habitat for Humanity was established in Honduras with the goal of providing support to low-income families to improve their housing conditions. Loans and grants support the construction and improvement of simple, safe and economic housing. HFH Honduras has been able to serve 22,000 families, and since 1994 the Global Village program has hosted more than 3,000 volunteers to help give a hand up to families in need of decent and affordable housing.

What will it cost?

This opportunity to build in Honduras will cost approximately
 $ 2020 CAD + round-trip airfare + $200 USD for R&R*

The cost includes lodging, food, ground transportation, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Honduras and the Global Village program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the airfare - this will be two separate receipts. The costs for the R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

Meet the Team Leader:

Hello! My name is Meghan Smith and I am very excited to be leading a team to Honduras this coming Spring. This will be my 6th Global Village trip and my second Global Village trip to Honduras.

In 2015, Honduras stole my heart and I am so excited to be returning next April! My other Global Village trips took me to Jordan, Cambodia, Lesotho and Sri Lanka. Each and every trip is cherished and holds a special place in my heart.

I love participating in the Global Village program because I strongly believe in the Habitat philosophy of giving a hand up rather than a hand out, I love being immersed completely into a new culture and community and I love building new friendships. I am very excited to be leading this team in the beautiful country of Honduras and hope you will join me on this adventure.

Please feel free to contact me at meghanshfh@gmail.com if you would like to learn more about this trip or apply now using our on-line application!
