Looking for a way to give back? Our team will work with local people to provide an improved quality of life for families in Mulanje.
Described as the “Warm Heart Of Africa”, Malawi is among the world's least-developed countries. Unsanitary, temporary housing conditions such as mud floors, thatched roofs, poor ventilation and no windows characterize 78% of houses in Malawi. Such housing is conducive to the spread of diseases like respiratory and gastro-intestinal infections, particularly among children under five years of age and those with HIV- weakened immune systems. Mulanje is one of the districts in Malawi which is highly affected with HIV/AIDS, causing many children to be orphans. HFH Malawi concentrates their home construction efforts in Mulanje, Malawi to build homes for these orphans and their caretakers.

Where will I stay? What will I eat?
Our lodging will be at one of the local hotels (with double occupancy). Breakfast will be taken at the hotel, lunch at the build site and dinner at local restaurants. Snacks and water will be provided at the work site.
What will it cost?
|The cost for this opportunity to build in Malawi is approximately
$2,700 + round-trip airfare to Blantyre + approx $600 for R&R*
The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Fiji and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Blantyre, Malawi. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.
*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts. The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.
There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you. These costs are not tax deductible.
Meet the Team Leader: Susanne Dittmer
Susanne Dittmer lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a long-time Habitat fan with a number of builds under her belt, having traveled to Madagascar, El Salvador, Mongolia, Macedonia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Chile, Zambia, Indonesia (Bali and Java), Hawaii and Ethiopia. The Malawi trip will be her 10th trip as a team leader and she is excited to be building in Africa again. Susanne is looking forward to spending time with a group of like-minded people while getting to know Malawi from a very different angle. When not traveling, she works in the healthcare industry and also enjoys various sports, outdoor activities, as well as trying her hand at DIY projects.
