Big Build! Dong Thap, Vietnam

November 3-12, 2018

Join hundreds of volunteers from around the world and all walks of life at the Vietnam Big Build!

We would like to invite YOU to be part of a team of 30 Canadian volunteers who will join forces with Habitat for Humanity Vietnam this November 2018 to build 26 homes alongside families in need of safe, affordable and decent housing.

Global Neighbours
Habitat for Humanity Canada builds homes locally and globally. As part of our international work, Habitat Canada is supporting Habitat Vietnam’s Big Build with not just volunteers, but also funding through our Global Neighbours program, which is supported by local Habitat for Humanity organizations across Canada. We’re committed to sustainable solutions. That’s why it’s important to us that these homes will not only include access to safe water and sanitation facilities, but Habitat Vietnam will also be providing home construction and maintenance training to these 26 families and continuing their work raising awareness in the community about the need for sanitation and safe housing.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity Vietnam

Since 2001, Habitat for Humanity Vietnam has empowered almost 14,000 Vietnamese families to improve their living conditions through decent homes, clean water and safe sanitation. Habitat Vietnam has also provided training in areas such as natural disaster preparation, financial education, and hygiene practices to more than 100,000 individualsHabitat for Humanity has been working with families in Dong Thap to build a better life for themselves since 2011. Although progress has been made, the population of more than 1.6 million is constantly exposed to annual flooding. Such natural disasters make these agriculture-dependent families,  who earn less than $100 USD a month,at risk of falling back into poverty.

The health and safety of the team is always top priority.

What will it cost?

The cost for this 10 day opportunity to build in the Vietnam Big Build will cost:
$2,950 + round-trip airfare + approx $200 USD for R&R*

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Vietnam. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leader: Johanna Fernandez

Hello everybody, my name is Johanna Fernandez and I’m thrilled to be sharing this incredible experience with you. My first trip with Habitat for Humanity Canada’s Global Village was in 2008 and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve participated in eight Global Village trips as a volunteer and I have led many more to different parts of our beautiful world.

Traveling with Habitat for Humanity, either as a volunteer or as a team leader, has given me the opportunity to interact with many wonderful Habitat families in countries like Tajikistan, Fiji, Macedonia, Romania, Bolivia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Ethiopia, and many others. As well, I’ve been fortunate enough to do two builds in our beautiful country, one in P.E.I and another in Iqaluit! I’m hoping to be part of this incredible program for a long time.

If you’ve done a Habitat trip previously, then you know what an amazing experience it is. And if you haven’t yet, and this trip will be your first experience with Habitat, then be ready to experience one of the most rewarding trips you’ll ever make. I’m looking forward to sharing this incredible experience with you!
