                                           El Salvador- La Libertad

March 02-10,2019

Join this trip to El Salvador and immerse yourself in the local culture while helping make safe, affordable housing accessible to Habitat partner families. No construction skills necessary, just a good sense of humour, an open mind and heart, and a willingness to   "go with the flow"

Why should I go to El Salvador?

El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. The housing shortage affects more than 944,000 families and continues to grow as the population increases. That statistic means that 6 out of 10 families live in inadequate housing. With approximately 31.9% of the population living in relative or extreme poverty, many families do not have access to financing to improve their homes.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity El Salvador

Habitat El Salvador offers a variety of housing solutions to meet the needs of Salvadoran families including: assistance in the legalization of land, new home construction and home improvements. A total of 8 community projects have been developed in association with local partners such as local governments, foundations, private companies, churches, etc. These projects include land acquisition, housing,  social infrastructure, vocational and business training.

Houses are built with concrete blocks and structural steel reinforcement, glass shutter windows, metal doors, a patio, a perimeter fence that protects the house from erosion, and a cement tile floor.

Home improvements are intended to impact the qualitative deficit, allowing the gradual improvement of existing houses. A variety of alternatives are offered, including loans for risk mitigation build  projects, legalization of land ownership and any other financial needs related to housing improvement.

Over 4200 families are served every year through the different services Habitat for Humanity El Salvador provides. Although families come from different backgrounds and present different needs.

Come prepared for a full week of hard physical labor in a rural setting and a willingness to learn and interact with community members. We ask our teams to try to stay flexible in order to enjoy this experience to it’s fullest.

                                                  What will it cost?

The cost for this 9  day opportunity to build in El Salvador  is approximately

$1,860 + $ 250 for R&R + round-trip airfare

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to Habitat El Salvador and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to El Salvador . Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to Habitat Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Meet the Team Leader: Kelly

Hi, I'm Kelly Squier-Andrews! I'm from Kingston, Ontario and I've been involved with Habitat for Humanity in some form since 2011. I've been a team member on two GV teams (1 to El Salvador & 1 to Honduras) and have led one other team to El Salvador. Though my in-country experience with GV isn't as vast as some of the other team leaders, I had he opportunity to experience GV from the coordinator aspect for 1 year when I worked for Habitat for Humanity Canada in the GV department as the sending coordinator for the Asia Pacific region. Though my life has taken me on another path career-wise, Habitat will always be a big part of my life. When not volunteering or working as a Project Manager for a digital marketing agency, I can be found spending time outdoors with my husband and our young son. This will be my third time visiting El Salvador and I am so excited to go back. It's an experience you'll never forget!

Please feel free to reach out to squier.k@gmail.com  to learn more about the trip or apply now using our online application. Looking forward to hearing from you!"
