Open Team
Salima, Malawi

August 24 - September 5, 2014

It is never too late to make a difference and create a positive impact in the world! Join Global Village on this this extraordinary 13-day, cross-cultural experience and help build simple, decent and affordable houses in Salima, Malawi during summer 2014. No previous construction skills or experience is required — just a desire to learn, be flexible, share tasks and enjoy making friends and acquaintances from different cultures as well as your own.

About Malawi

Ninety percent of Malawi’s population lives in rural areas and 75 percent live on less than US $2 a day. The economy is predominately agricultural and is dependent on substantial international assistance. Be
cause of the widespread poverty, four out of five families live in substandard homes, with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house. A typical village hut is built of mud and daub with a dirt floor and thatched roof and requires frequent repair. The conditions put families at high risk of all kinds of diseases, with leaky roofs making the house damp and mud floors attracting insects.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi

HFH Malawi was established in 1986 and exists to address poverty housing issues amongst orphans and vulnerable children, and low income people. Habitat Malawi houses are made of kiln-fired clay bricks, glass windows, air vents for good ventilation and iron sheet roofs. Each house has a foundation made from large stones, brick or cement. By providing improved housing to families, Habitat Malawi has enhanced the lives of people and reduced the occurrence of malaria, respiratory illnesses and intestinal parasites.

Team Leader

My name is Trevor Morningstar and I am from South Western Ontario. I have a deep rooted passion for traveling and helping those who are less fortunate than myself. I love that HFH combines those passions with adventure, hard work and diverse groups of people. This will be my fifth Habitat for Humanity trip and second time leading.

I first started with HFH in Macedonia in 2010, then travelled to Zambia in 2011, Nepal in 2012, and most recently led a team to Guatemala in 2013. Aside from HFH, I have done a lot of international travel to Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
