October 18 - 28, 2014Zambia - Warm friendly people, a land of awe-inspiring splendors and abundant wild life. While immersing yourself in culture, you can help a family in need build a decent affordable home.
The capital of Zambia is Lusaka, located in the south central part of the country. The official language of Zambia is English which is used to conduct business. The main local language is Nyanja.
Zambia remains one of the least developed nations and poorest in the world, ranking 165 out of 177. Decent housing in urban areas remains unattainable and unaffordable for most and slums abound.
Habitat for Humanity in Zambia
HFH started in 1984 building houses for fishing families on Kabuyu Island. It has now expanded into six of the country’s nine provinces. The average house size is 35 sq meters( 300 sq. ft. ) . Materials for building include, bricks, cement blocks and mortar.
Under the Vulnerable Group Housing program, HFH Zambia provides subsidized housing solutions for orphans and their caregivers. Their vulnerability as children puts them at a greater risk of abuse, especially sexual abuse. 1 in 7 adults live with HIV which has resulted in about 600,000 children being orphaned due to HIV/AIDS.
(* arrangements will be made for cultural events with HFH Zambia during the week)
Teams will stay in a modest hotel or guest house. Rooms are double occupancy and have shared bathroom (shower/toilet)
This trip to Zambia will cost approximately $2260 + round-trip airfare + $470.00 for R&R*.
The trip cost includes: lodging, food, ground transportation, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Zambia and the Global Village program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Lusaka, Zambia. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.
*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the airfare – this will be 2 separate receipts. The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.
There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you. These costs are not tax deductible.
Hi, my name is Angie Salonen. I am very excited to be going back to Africa for the 4th time! I have been fortunate to have either participated or led several trips to New Orleans, Chile, Kenya, Nepal , Poland and El Salvador.
As a nurse, I have been a member of medical teams to Benin, Africa and Haiti twice. These experiences have been exceptionally rewarding. I live in Thunder Bay Ontario, on the beautiful shore of Lake Superior, easily accessible to winter and summer activities. Cycling is my passion.
No previous construction skills required, but a good sense of humour, willingness to work hard, and have fun while making lasting friendships are all needed.
