About Portugal
Housing is a major concern of lower income Portuguese families, who often live in dilapidated homes in rural areas or shacks in the big cities. Successive governments have liberalized key areas of the economy over the past 20 years after decades of military dictatorship, but economic growth has been slowing since 2001. The recent financial crisis left many people without jobs or savings to improve housing conditions.

Habitat for Humanity in Portugal

Habitat for Humanity first started working in Portugal in 1996. They help low-income families by building new homes on family-owned land and by renovating houses in the towns of Braga and Amarante. Homes are made of traditional local materials: bricks, red roof tiles, shutters on the windows, and ceramic tiles inside.
Habitat for Humanity Portugal has served 56 families in the Braga and Amarante regions of the North East of the country. This region has several social problems; the major ones are related to housing, unemployment, desertification and low income.

While in Portugal, our itinerary will look something like this:
  • Sat. Oct 25th Arrive in Portugal / Travel to Amarante
  • Sun. Oct 26th Orientation
  • Mon. Oct 27th to Fri. Oct 31st Build days
  • Sat. Nov 1st R&R day in Porto
  • Sun. Nov 2nd Depart for home

*Note: Itinerary is subject to change

The trip cost includes:  lodging, food, ground transportation, travelers medical insurance, orientation materials and a donation to HFH Portugal and the Global Village program.  Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Porto, Portugal. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.

The costs for the R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada. Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.
