Open Team
Ethiopia

November 1 – 15, 2014

Are you interested in immersing yourself in the local culture of Ethiopia, while also having the opportunity to explore, learn, grow and serve?  On this build, you will help build a home or participate in a water sanitation project which will provide a better life for a number of families. We will also have the opportunity to build relationships in another culture and experience life in East Africa.

We are looking for positive attitudes, open minds, flexibility, adventurous spirits and a sense of humour! Absolutely no construction experience or language abilities are required for this adventure -  just a desire to make a difference for a family in need of affordable housing or to help provide the gift of clean water.

About Ethiopia

Ethiopia is an unexpected treasure with fairy tale castles and buried churches as well as national parks and wildlife. It is a beautiful, mountainous country with a fascinating history and rich cultural heritage. It is also one of the poorest countries in the world.
In Ethiopia, almost 90 percent of the urban houses are of poor construction.  Houses in slum areas are old and dilapidated and too narrow to accommodate families, compromising their health and dignity.

About Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia

The need for decent housing is especially high among vulnerable groups and increasing exponentially. As of June 2012, Habitat has provided support for 2140 homes, 5931 improved kitchens, and 2659 families have benefited from the construction of toilets and communal water points in Addis Ababa and other affiliates.

Type of construction for volunteers

Housing work may involve digging, fixing frames, plastering, mixing and carrying cement and painting. If we are assigned to a water sanitation project, it may involve construction site clearing, excavating, concrete mixing and moving and masonry.

Cost

This trip to Ethiopia will cost approximately $1820 + round trip airfare + $430(USD) for R&R.

The trip cost includes:  lodging, food, ground transportation, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Ethiopia and the Global Village program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Addis Ababa Ethiopia. This arrangement should be done in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the airfare – this will be 2 separate receipts.  The costs for R&R portion of the trip are not eligible for a tax receipt and this money must not be sent to HFH Canada.  Your team leader will let you know how to pay this.

There are additional travel costs such as passport, visa and immunizations which the team leader will discuss with you.  These costs are not tax deductible.

Team Leaders

Hello from Kevin and Lindsey Cox.  We are so excited to be leading a trip to Ethiopia this year, and are looking for a group of enthusiastic people to join us.  After travelling for many years, we participated in a Habitat build in Kenya in 2012 and immediately fell in love with the Habitat model.  If you would like the opportunity to help others, work alongside them and their families, and get to know their culture in a very personal way, come join us this November.

Please feel free to contact us at:  lindseycox@coxandcompany.ca   if you would like to learn more about this trip, or apply now using our on-line application!
