Tobique First Nation

New Brunswick

September 22 - 29, 2018

Work with a First Nation Family to build a home!

Join a team of like-minded people to help a First Nation family achieve their dream of a safe and affordable home of their own while learning more about the culture of a First Nation community. Construction experience is not necessary to join the trip – just a spirit of adventure, willingness to work hard, a sense of humour and openness to new experiences.

Why should I go to Tobique First Nation?

Tobique First Nation is one of six Wolastoqiyik or Maliseet Nation reserves in New Brunswick. With a population of about 2,500, Tobique is the largest of the Maliseet Nation reserves in the province. The reserve is located on the north side of the Tobique River near where the river flows into the St. John River. The Tobique Reserve was established in 1801 with nearly 20,000 acres being granted after a petition to the government by band members. Over the years, the reserve area was reduced by surrenders to squatters and a major surrender in 1892. Today, roughly two-thirds of Tobique First Nation members reside on the reserve lands.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity Fredericton

Tobique First Nation (TFN) and Habitat for Humanity Fredericton Area (Habitat Fredericton) have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding. The project is the first indigenous home building partnership between a First Nation community and Habitat for Humanity in Atlantic Canada. The home ownership program will enable more First Nations member families to realize their dream of home ownership.

Habitat Fredericton works toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live by giving families a “hand-up, not a “hand-out.” Habitat Fredericton’s territory covers the area encompassed by the city, western and northern New Brunswick.

What will it cost?

This cost for this 8 day opportunity to build in Fredericton is approximately
$1,770 + round-trip airfare

The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to HFH Fredericton and the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Fredericton. Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader.

*Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.

Meet the Team Leader: Ernie Fraser

I have participated in 19 Global Village (GV) trips and have been the team leader on 18 of the trips to places in Europe, Asia, South America, the US, Yukon and PEI. I believe GV trips provide tremendous opportunities to strengthen the global village across cultures in ways that are truly unique. I am extremely pleased to be leading a GV trip to the province where I was born and grew up.
