Habitat India - Pondicherry

(New Homes for Irula Tribal Community)

Volunteer with a new Global Village project supporting rural populations in India access safe and decent homes

November 16th to 27th, 2019

Our team will work alongside local masons and homeowner families in Pondicherry to help construct their new home. Habitat India's projects are focused on supporting home construction, healthy homes and disaster relief. This projects focuses it's work on building disaster resilient homes for the Irula Tribal families.

Habitat for Humanity India

Habitat India builds homes and provides housing-related services to low-income, marginalized families across India. Habitat India began operations in 1983 and is today one of Habitat’s largest programs in the Asia Pacific region. It works in partnership with local, grassroots, non-governmental organizations, and micro-finance institutions throughout India to provide decent housing. Habitat India has helped families gain access to decent shelter as well as rebuild their homes and lives in the aftermath of disasters. Habitat India has helped more than 319,375 families  irrespective of caste, creed and language, gain access to decent shelter. By 2022, Habitat India plans to reach out to 60 million people in need with improved housing solutions, safe sanitation, post-disaster reconstruction and by engaging youth in its work As part of their endeavor to provide a hand up and not a handout, Habitat India provides shelter assistance, disaster response (DR), housing support services, works with vulnerable groups, and provides housing renovations. Specifically, in Pondicherry the need for housing in rural areas is huge. Families live in small huts with thatched leaf/tiled/tin roofs with mud/cement walls and floors. The average size is 150 Sq. ft. and have no toilet facilities. New homes are approximately 350 Sq. ft. and have adequate sanitation facilities. This has a massive impact on the quality of life of families especially women and girls who have safe facilities for their sanitation needs. Pondicherry is located approximately a four hour drive from Chennai. Team Leader

My name is Laura Gibson and I will be heading back to India in November for the 4th time! Want to come with?

My husband and I have been taking part in Habitat builds since 2008 and we are hooked! I have been on 18 trips and lead 16 of those teams to El Salvador, Bolivia, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago and most recently India.

When we aren’t traveling, we live in beautiful Vancouver BC, where I work as an illustrator and also as a manager with the Vancouver Farmers Market Association. My husband and I have three dogs a ton of nieces and nephews. And Habitat for Humanity is our passion.

I am looking for teammates who are: motivated to make a difference, very hard-working (we want to get as much building done as we possibly can), flexible and easy-going (very important), want to travel outside the box, have a sense of humour (VERY important on these trips;), like to say ‘yes’ to whatever comes our way!

Did I mention sense of humour? You may be working in the heat, sometimes in tough conditions, and often things do not go the way you had planned. A sense of humour goes a loooong way!

If you want to travel with purpose, make a difference, try new things, make new friends and laugh at lot while doing it… then this trip is for you!

Please feel free to contact me at gibsongirl@telus.net if you would like to learn more about this trip or apply now using the on-line application!
