Indigenous Housing Partnership

Amount Raised $0.00
Team Goal $0.00

Habitat Grey Bruce

Chippewa of Nawash

(Wiarton, ON)

Volunteer in an Indigenous Housing Partnership whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

August 17th - August 24th 2019

In 2018, Habitat Grey Bruce celebrated its 31st year of existence with the dedication of the first Habitat home built on Indigenous territory in Ontario in the community of Neyaashiinigmiing. This milestone represented the 40th house built in Grey Bruce. The local Habitat has now served 80 adults and 116 children since its inception.

Habitat Grey Bruce is planning to build up to 6 single detached houses in partnership with the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation in a new 25-acre development. This will be a continuation of a development started last year when 4 houses were built utilizing Habitat family selection criteria (including sweat equity) and a deferred homeownership model. Habitat Grey Bruce also is assisting the First Nation with homeownership education including a specialized house maintenance guide.

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce

The need for affordable housing continues to increase in many communities throughout Grey and Bruce counties. The average waiting list for assisted rental housing is about three years forcing many families to pay high rent in often substandard units.

There are nearly 2 billion people around the world who live in inadequate housing and more than 100 million are homeless. Habitat helps by building or renovating simple, decent houses in partnership with those in need. Not only do we want to be building homes here we are also committed to supporting the construction of homes internationally through annual contributions to Habitat Canada’s Global Neighbours Alliance.

Team Leader

Hi! My name is Brenley Crawford and I live in Mississauga. I have been involved with my local Habitat affiliate for over ten years: sitting on a variety of committees, helping on build sites, and volunteering at a Halton-Mississauga area ReStore.

I participated on my first international Global Village build in 2014 and have been hooked ever since! I am a firm believer in Habitat For Humanity’s “hand up, not a handout” philosophy. This Grey Bruce build will be my tenth GV build, and my eighth as team leader. My previous builds (Zambia, New Zealand, El Salvador, Philippines, Honduras, Fiji, Nicaragua, Halifax, and upcoming Malawi April 2019) were all unique and rewarding, offering the opportunity to build several different types of housing, as well as to experience and interact with cultures and people around the world. I am very excited to be leading my second Canadian Global Village and inaugural build up on the beautiful Bruce Peninsula, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere area. No construction experience is necessary, just a commitment to working with a team of like-minded people hoping to do a bit of good in our own beautiful country of Canada.
