Habitat Fredericton Area

Volunteer in Fredericton whilst giving a "hand up" to a family in need

September 21st - September 28th 2019

Buying a house in New Brunswick is a lot more affordable compared with the rest of Canada. According to industry experts, sales in the province are expected to remain strong in 2019, while it is anticipated that national sales will drop to a near decade low because of rising interest rates and strict mortgage stress-test rules that have made it challenging for buyers to access the housing market.

In partnership with the Fredericton Area Canadian Home Builders Association who have already committed to supply product and labour, Habitat is planning to construct a house for a family with physical disabilities. The finished product will be a three-bedroom bungalow built on a slab with fully accessible. The goal is to design and build a home that meets all current and anticipated needs while remaining affordable.

Other partners who will be participating in the build include: Muscular Dystrophy Canada, occupational therapists, Ability New Brunswick, and a local designer who has expertise in accessible design. This build will bring stability and opportunity to a family experiencing extreme difficulties.

Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for this individual donation.

(2) Participants will need to independently arrange and pay for air transportation from their point of departure to Halifax and must be done in consultation with the Team Leader. Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the eligible airfare.

Team Leader

Kathy Brett is the Manager, Fund Development for Habitat for Humanity Great Toronto Area and is responsible for securing donations of construction material, trade services and cash to help reduce overall construction budget.

Fredericton will be Kathy's third Global Village build. Her first was to Whitehorse to celebrate Canada 150 and then last year she lead her first team to Hawaii. Every build is unique and inspiring but Kathy believes this one will be the most meaningful yet. The highlight at the end of the week will be participating in the home dedication ceremony for one amazing family. Partnering with Muscular Dystrophy Canada and many more volunteers, Habitat Fredericton Area will be constructing a fully accessible home for a family in need.
