Housing Renovation and Rehabilitation

Amount Raised $0.00
Team Goal $0.00

Habitat Portugal - Braga

(Housing Renovation and Rehabilitation)

Volunteer in Portugal whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

June 8th - 16th 2019

Our team will work alongside the local community to rebuild a home. Renovations to housing units makes the cost for partner families cheaper and more affordable. Most of the projects are based in rural areas where some homes don't have electricity, basic sanitation, and running water. In the cities, the biggest challenges are overcrowding and lack of insulation. All these issues are putting families at-risk.

Habitat for Humanity Portugal

Habitat for Humanity Portugal was founded in 1996 and completed its first project in 1998.

Since that time Habitat Portugal has been helping families in need. The most important criterion for the family selection is the existence of inappropriate housing conditions. Affiliates work with low-income families that come from diverse backgrounds: single parent, social challenges (domestic violence, alcoholism, social exclusion) in addition to persons with disabilities.

To date, Habitat Portugal has served 84 families and more than 270 people.

Team Leader

My Name is Mathieu Cléroux and this will be my 7th Global village trip. My first experience with Habitat was in 2007 when I joined a team in El Salvador. It was such a life changing experience that I immediately decided to become a team leader. Since then, I have led teams to the Dominican Republic, Mongolia, Argentina, and Portugal. Although I have travelled a lot, in many parts of the world, I have always found Habitat builds to be especially rewarding.

Outside of Habitat, I work as a general contractor and I run an adventure travel company, both in the Ottawa/ Gatineau region. I spend most of my free time outdoors doing a lot of camping, flatwater and whitewater canoeing, paddle boarding, mountain biking, hiking, trail running, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding.

No construction experience is required for this trip! Only an open mind, an adventurous soul, and a desire to help out.
