Habitat Poland - Gliwice

(Renovation/Adaptation Projects)

Visit Poland whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

July 13th - July 22nd 2019

Left in the wake of communist economic and social policies, many families have no choice but to live in substandard housing which threatens their health and safety. Habitat Poland renovates apartments in blocks of flats to try and meet Poland's demand for more than 1.5 million affordable apartment.

Projects involve renovation and/or working on the next stage of construction of existing housing units owned by the partner families (adapting them to meet decent housing conditions), as well as remodeling municipality buildings. They also work in partnership with social enterprises to serve the homeless, ill children, disabled adults, recovering addicts, and other vulnerable groups.

Habitat for Humanity Poland

Habitat for Humanity Gliwice was first dreamed of in 1990, started in 1991, and became an official Habitat affiliate in 1992. It was the very first local Habitat in Europe and naturally has become an example and model citizen throughout Europe.

In 2002, Habitat for Humanity Poland was established to support all national efforts on the way to changing the lives of families in need.

Since, 1992, over one hundred low-income families have started living in Habitat homes. Construction projects have been completed in Warsaw, Gdansk, Gliwice, and Wroclaw.

Team Leader

My name is Kathryn Petrovich and I am ecstatic to be leading a Global Village team to build in Poland! I adore everything Habitat. My personal involvement with the non-profit has been extensive for many years - both locally here at home and abroad. My central focus has been working as an international, team lead where I plan and organize the overseas trip details for the team, and help manage varying aspects of the detailed process while in-country. Additionally, I have had the privilege and joy of working at Habitat Canada (coordinating teams like this one!) with the Global Village department, so it’s fair to say I am fully immersed and engaged with the mission and values.

This will be my 13th GV build and second visit to the region. Being a respectful, positive, team player are the main pre-requisites to join this team. I am grateful to have had the privilege of leading diverse groups globally.

My passion is travelling to the unknown, creating meaningful memories for others, giving back, and being immersed in a nation’s culture while learning directly from native residents organically. And what better way to lend a hand, and experience new traditions in a local community abroad, than through a GV build!!

If you are open-minded, adaptable and would like to be a part of an extraordinary crew who will make a substantial difference for a family and community (and surprisingly within yourself too) – I would really love to hear from you! You may contact me at: kathryn.petrovich@hotmail.com if you would like to learn more about this build or feel free to apply now using our on-line application.
