Guatemala – Rabinal –Baja Verapaz

February 16 - 24, 2019

Are you looking for a life changing experience and to make a positive difference in the lives of others and yourself?  If so, join our team in Guatemala where you’ll roll-up your sleeves with your fellow like-minded team members and help provide decent and affordable homes to the millions of Guatemalan families living in substandard housing. All it takes is a positive, open-minded, totally flexible attitude, a willingness to learn, a great sense of humor and the desire to have fun while working hard as part of a team.  There are no prior skills or construction experience required.

Why should I go to Guatemala?

With a housing deficit of 1.8 million homes for a population of around 17 million people, Guatemala has a significant need for accessible housing options. Houses are commonly constructed of sub-standard materials and are in dire need of renovation from the effects of storms or earthquakes, and also serve as home to very large extended families. Habitat’s work in Guatemala is important and your collaboration is essential. Come to Guatemala and help not only build homes, but the possibility of a secure future for families.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity Guatemala and Baja Verapaz

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the quality of life of Guatemalan families through partial or full funding for the construction, improvement and repair of homes across the country.

Habitat Guatemala has contributed to the reduction of 4.6 percent of the country’s housing deficit, both qualitative and quantitative. Our commitment is that all Guatemalans have a decent place to live. Until December 2015, Habitat Guatemala has helped a total of 86,304 families, with construction, improvement and home repairs.

Located in central Guatemala, the department of Baja Verapaz is mountainous, remote, and covered in lush cloud forests.

It is about 4 hours from Guatemala City. The population is 59% indigenous, made up of members of the Kakchiquel and Quiche groups. Baja Verapaz ranks 6th in poverty in the country, with over 70% of the population living in poverty, and over 21% living in extreme poverty. Among the sources of income in Baja Verapaz are agriculture , ceramic crafts and  coffee .

Meet the Team Leaders: Bob Dickeson and Joan Cossentine

Our first Global Village HFH build was in Latin America in 2008 and we have since lead 6 HFH builds in El Salvador and Nicaragua. We were fortunate to spend time in Guatemala in 2018 and now are really excited to be able to return to the country with an HFH team to build a home. HFH builds are terrific opportunities to help others while personally growing and working with great teams. Please consider joining us for this build. No construction experience is necessary. If you are looking for an adventure, would like to make a positive change in someone’s life, and definitely don’t mind getting dirty you will have an amazing experience.
