Habitat Nova Scotia

Halifax

Volunteer in Halifax whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

July 20th - July 27th 2019

Habitat for Humanity plans to build its largest project in Canada in Halifax, with a 78-unit development off Drysdale Road. The development will include townhouses, apartments and condos and is being called "Habitat Way."

The apartments in the multi-unit building will be rented to low-income individuals according to a formula, which will see them pay no more than 30 percent of their income in rent.

Breaking ground is coming at a crucial time for the municipality of Halifax, where more than 22,000 households, or 13.7 percent, are in need of affordable housing, based on the most recent census numbers from 2016.

Partner families are selected on the basis of need, their ability to repay a no down payment, no interest mortgage, and their commitment to contribute 500 hours in sweat equity, into the building of their home and home for others. Mortgage payment from Habitat partner families goes into a revolving fund (The Fund for Humanity) which helps build more Habitat homes in a cycle that empowers individuals and lets families help families.

Team Leader

Hi everyone, my name is Kristana! For the past seven years, I have worked as a real estate agent in Thunder Bay, which has provided me with an opportunity to travel the world. This will be my second Global Village trip as a Team Leader. My first time was in New Brunswick last year. I have previously volunteered with Habitat builds in Vietnam, Portugal, and Hawaii. I have always had a passion for the organization, which resulted in me becoming a board member of local affiliate in 2016. I don't have any children of my own, but I have sponsored one continuously since 2008, and had the unique experience of meeting them in Guatemala.

Please feel free to contact me at kristana@live.ca if you would like to learn more about this trip, or apply now using our on-line application!
