Romania Big Build

(Vaideeni)

Volunteer in Romania whilst giving a "hand up" to families in need

October 4th - October 14th 2019

Habitat for Humanity Romania has three main programs: HAB (Healthy and Accessible Buildings), DRRR (Disaster Risk Reduction and Response) and advocacy, which aims to influence policy through improved housing solutions that positively impacts communities and socio-economic sectors nationwide.

HFH Romania has 88,500 beneficiaries, built or renovated more than 2,000 homes, and constructed 600 new homes under the following program areas: new home construction, renovation/rehabilitation, technical assistance and support, disaster response and prevention, energy efficiency and financial education training, and community projects.

This will be the first time that the Romania Big Build (an accelerated construction event) will be hosted by the partner community of Vaideeni. The reason why this remote town was selected is because 25 homes were completely destroyed by massive floods in 2014. Some affected families have been living for more than four years in container homes. Others live with relatives or in impoverished neighbourhoods.

Habitat for Humanity will rebuild 10 homes for the 10 most vulnerable families. Many of the local inhabitants identify as Romani people. Organizers of the Big Build anticipate that the build will attract 65 international volunteers (almost half will be Canadian) and 135 local volunteers. Eight homes will be built during the Big Build - groundbreaking will commence in April - while two more will be built throughout 2019 and 2020.

Habitat for Humanity Romania

Habitat for Humanity Romania started in 1996 in a small town situated in the north-west part of the country. Now, Habitat Romania has projects in several part of the country, and is the biggest Romanian NGO focused on eliminating poverty and providing safe, decent, and affordable housing as a basic human right.

The housing situation in Romania is one of the most difficult in the European Union.

  • 5.5 million people are in need of home renovations.
  • Over 58% of the population is living in overcrowded conditions, compared to an EU average of 17.8%.
  • 42.5% of the population is living in houses without a bath and toilet with running water.

Team Leader

My name is Doug Amirault and I grew up in a small fishing village, Pubnico, Nova Scotia. I now reside in Toronto and work for one of the largest hotel chains in the world with openings and renovations across Canada.

My first experience with Habitat was eight years ago as a participant in El Salvador. Despite missing a flight connection and not having my luggage for the entire trip, my first build was a life changing experience and was what inspired me to become a Team Leader.

The opportunity to be immersed in the local culture, make life-long friend and most importantly, seeing first-hand the impact that Habit volunteers make in the lives of families is why I volunteer.

My first build as a Team Leader was in Portugal and I have been back six times since. I have also lead teams to the Yukon, Hawaii, Chile and Guatemala.

Habitat is a great way to grow as a person and give back. I look forward to having you join me as part of one of the more unique Habitat experiences - the Romania Big Build!
