Habitat Nepal - East Region

Volunteer on a Global Village project whilst supporting a 'hand up' to families effected by natural disasters in Nepal

November 15th  - November 25th, 2019

Habitat Nepal's projects in the East Region are focused on home construction for earthquake affected families as part of Habitat Nepal's Chhanna (Roof) Program. Our team will work alongside local masons and a Habitat partner family support families realize safe, resilient and stable housing.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal

Habitat for Humanity began working in Nepal in 1997, by 2005, Habitat Nepal helped 830 families directly build homes. In the East Region, Habitat Nepal is assisting earthquake effected families in constructing new homes through a family driven approach. Since the April 25, 2015 earthquake, thousands of families are still living in temporary shelters. Under the earthquake assistance program, Habitat Nepal is supporting households through social mobilization, technical assistance, tiered assistance and quality construction materials. In 2017, Habitat Nepal marked 20 years of home construction and has helped address the shelter needs of more than 70,000 Nepali families. In the same year Habitat Nepal launched the Channa (Roof) Program. The Program consists of four pillars social mobilization, tecnhical assistance, tiered support, and market development. GV builds are part of the tiered support pillar focused on supporting families by providing financial and building support for adequate homes. East Region builds are located a 35 - 45 minute flight from Kathmandu. For more information visit Habitat Nepal's website, here.

Team Leader

I’m Alan Dickinson and along with Jane , my wife of 45 years, live in Ottawa.  We have 2 grown children, a son who lives in Toronto and a daughter who lives in Ottawa and who also presented us with one amazing little granddaughter in 2010.

In 2011 I retired after 40 years in industry and quickly felt the pull to get more involved with global projects. I soon discovered the Global Village arm of Habitat for Humanity and I had my first Global Village experience in Cluj, Romania and just loved it. I have followed that with builds in Nepal (4) El Salvador, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Argentina, Philippines, P.E.I., New Zealand (2), India (2),  Malawi , Carter Build in Winnipeg , Whitehorse and Chile with fourteen of them as the team leader.

Seeing what a small group of like-minded, motivated people can do in a relatively short period of time is truly amazing and I want to be part of more of it.

My main interests are family, kayaking, yoga, X-C skiing, reading and travelling.

I am very much looking forward to leading this Habitat for Humanity Global Village team to Nepal and to making a positive difference in the local community.
