Habitat Nepal - West Region (Banke district)

November 1st - 11th, 2019

Volunteer with like-minded people and local Nepalis on a Global Village project to support a positive impact for families through access to safe, decent and affordable homes.

Habitat Nepal recently launched their program in the west region focused on home construction in support of families as part of Habitat Nepal's Chhanna (Roof) Program. Our team will work alongside local masons and a Habitat partner family to contribute to Habitat's mission of reducing the housing deficit. All volunteers need is a positive, open-minded  and flexible attitude, a willingness to learn, a sense of humour and the ability to work hard as part of a team. No prior skills or experience required.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal

Habitat for Humanity began working in Nepal in 1997, by 2005, Habitat Nepal helped 830 families directly build homes. Like many places in the world, decent shelter is a symbol of social dignity. The lack of it has been shown to be a barrier to other important things in life such as education, health care and social mobility. In the Banke District, Habitat Nepal is assisting families in constructing new homes through an owner driven approach as a strategy to improve their social dignity. In 2017, Habitat Nepal marked 20 years of home construction and has helped address the shelter needs of more than 70,000 Nepali families. In the same year Habitat Nepal launched the Channa (Roof) Program. The Program consists of four pillars social mobilization, technical assistance, tiered support, and market development. GV builds are part of the tiered support pillar focused on supporting families by providing financial and building support for adequate homes. The Banke District is located a short 1 hour flight from Kathmandu. For more information visit Habitat Nepal's website, here.

Team Leader:

Matt first got involved with Habitat for Humanity at University, where he volunteered as President of the campus chapter and led a team of students to Florida on his first ever Habitat build. He has served on the Board of Directors for the North Bay and Blue Sky Region as well as served a full Board term with the Windsor-Essex affiliate as a Director. Matt’s first Global Village build was in 2011 to Vietnam and he’s been coming back for more ever since.

Matt is very passionate about advocating for Habitat’s sustainable housing model around the globe and introducing others to the Global Village experience. He has been a team leader since 2015 and this will be his 9th Global Village build. His favourite part of being a team leader is ensuring each volunteer feels welcomed, valued and energized. In-country, you can expect to meet as a team regularly to reflect on the interactions with the partner family as well as enjoy fun team building activities throughout the week.
