Habitat Fiji - Lautoka

Volunteer on a new Global Village project whilst supporting a 'hand up' to vulnerable populations in Fiji

October 19th - 30th, 2019

Our team will work alongside local masons and vulnerable families in Lautoka to help construct new homes. Habitat Fiji's projects range from new house construction to helping families rebuild after cyclones and other disasters while also working to improve waste and sanitation access. The focus of this project is to support rebuilding homes affected by the 2016 cyclone and building transitional shelters.

Habitat for Humanity Fiji

Habitat for Humanity started working in Fiji in 1991. Since then, Habitat has helped over 69,500 people to build homes through partnerships with governments, bilateral and non-profit organizations and international volunteers. Habitat works on a range of projects throughout the country including disaster response and recovery through repairs and temporary housing, construction or improvement of water and sanitation systems in rural and remote areas, and disabled access housing projects. As a result of rapid urban growth and rising land prices adequate housing has become a major challenge in Lautoka, Fiji's second largest city. Therefore, in recent years Habitat Fiji has focused on supporting families access shelter and upgrade access to water and sanitation. In 2017, Habitat for Humanity Fiji has supported more than 4,500 families through disaster response and over 2,000 families in more than 55 communities through water and sanitation improvements and built over 1,300 new houses For more information visit Habitat Fiji's website, here

Team Leader Bio

Ola! I am Sarah Pachkowsky and I live on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia.  I have been employed within the non-profit sector for over a decade and volunteering since I was a young girl. I also worked with my local Habitat for two years and learnt a lot about the local build initiatives, while researching about the housing need on an international scale.

I trained as a Team Leader for Habitat’s Global Village program in 2017, participated on a build in Kauai (2017) led a team of volunteers to participate in a house building project in Nicaragua in April 2018 and a house building project in El Salvador, April 2019.

Currently I am working on contracts with non-profits in my hometown, helping build capacity, community awareness and financial contributions. I am also taking online courses towards my master’s in international leadership, a Project Management Certificate through UBC and my real estate licence. When I am not working, going to school or volunteering you can find me with my dog Scotch, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, running or reading a book. Oh, and anything outdoors!

A build in Fiji seems like a great opportunity to help a family, meet new people, take in the beauty of the Island and learn about a new culture. Habitat builds are an experience you will never forget!
