Housing Renovation and Rehabilitation

Amount Raised $0.00
Team Goal $0.00

Habitat Portugal - Amarante

(Housing Renovation and Rehabilitation)

Volunteer with Habitat Portugal and a partner family to realize safe, decent and affordable housing.

November 2nd - 10th, 2019

Our team will work alongside the local community to rebuild a home. Renovations to housing units makes the cost for partner families cheaper and more affordable. Most of the projects are based in rural areas where some homes don't have electricity, basic sanitation, and running water. In the cities, the biggest challenges are overcrowding and lack of insulation. All these issues are putting families at-risk.

Habitat for Humanity Portugal

Habitat for Humanity Portugal was founded in 1996 and completed its first project in 1998.

Since that time Habitat Portugal has been helping families in need. The most important criterion for the family selection is the existence of inappropriate housing conditions. Affiliates work with low-income families that come from diverse backgrounds: single parent, social challenges (domestic violence, alcoholism, social exclusion) in addition to persons with disabilities. Economic growth has been slowing since 2001 and the financial crisis left many people without jobs or savings to improve housing conditions. Habitat Portugal partners with families to overcome these challenges and create safe, healthier living conditions.

To date, Habitat Portugal has served 84 families and more than 270 people.

Team Leader

Hi - my name is Dennis Mitschke (front left of the photo). I am a retired carpenter living in Summerland, BC. I have been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Global Village since 2004 and leading builds since 2006. During this time I have led teams in Canada, Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. I enjoy travelling and sharing my skills. Having a trades background does have some advantages, but I have found that a spirit of adventure and giving and the ability to be flexible (both in mind and body) are far more important than any set of "hand skills". Therefore, no skills are required! I look forward to returning to Portugal for my second build there and working alongside the partner family.
