Habitat Indonesia - Batam

Volunteer on a new Global Village project whilst supporting a 'hand up' to vulnerable populations in Indonesia

November 23d to December 2nd, 2019

Our team will work alongside local masons in Batam to help construct a new home for a local family. Habitat Indonesia's projects are focused on supporting new home construction and improving sanitation for families living in informal settlements to increase the quality of life and ensure a healthy living environment.

Habitat for Humanity Indonesia

Habitat for Humanity Indonesia was established on May 1, 1997 and currently has 4 branch offices, namely Batam, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. Its largest program was rebuilding after the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami with more than 8,000 families helped. Since its establishment until the end of December 2017, Habitat for Humanity Indonesia has assisted more than 52,912 families, with the construction of new homes, renovation of old houses, provision of clean water and public toilets, and the construction of community facilities. Habitat's program in Batam focuses on families going through resettlement. In the Kabil sub-district the government has provided plots of land to families living in informal settlements. However, due do financial limitations families aren't able to build safe and decent homes or sanitation. Habitat Indonesia supports homeowner families to build their new home. Batam is a small island of the coast of Singapore (approx. 45 min by ferry). Habitat Indonesia - Batam branch continues to develop and improve the construction of simple, decent and affordable housing. Special attention and sensitivity to the local culture is given in the design of the houses and in achieving the goal of eradicating poverty housing. To find out more about Habitat for Humanity Indonesia, please visit their website, here

Team Leader

Hello, my name is Emilyn.  I was born and raised in Brantford, ON and made my way over to the West Coast over 10 years ago.  I currently reside in the beautiful Vancouver area- West Coast, best coast, right?  In my spare time, I love doing anything outdoors such as volleyball, hiking, running, tennis- anything active.  I also love volunteering for my local church and helping out around my community.  I am also a Registered Nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  I have been blessed to be able to be in my profession for over 17 years.  It is my passion to help others.

This will be my 7th Habitat for Humanity Build, and my third as Team Leader.  My previous builds have all been amazing.  I love meeting people and building relationships with others.   These builds are pretty incredible in every sense- being a part of someone else journey, building their future, and changing their perspective on their life.  It is an experience unlike any other, because it humbles you in recognizing how blessed we truly are in our lives.

Construction experience is not required on this trip, just the desire to work hard, help out, and the passion to make a difference one brick at a time.  I am looking forward to building with you in Indonesia.
