                                     El Salvador - Sonsonate

                       March  14- 22, 2020

Volunteer on a New Global Village Project and offer a 'hand up' to Habitat For Humanity El Salvador's partner families.

Why should I go to El Salvador?

El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. The housing shortage affects more than 944,000 families and continues to grow as the population increases. That statistic means that 6 out of 10 families live in inadequate housing. With approximately 31.9% of the population living in relative or extreme poverty, many families do not have access to financing to improve their homes.

Tell me about Habitat for Humanity El Salvador

Habitat El Salvador projects are focused on  a variety of housing solutions to meet the needs of Salvadoran families including: assistance in the legalization of land, new home construction and home improvements. A total of 8 community projects have been developed in association with local partners such as local governments, foundations, private companies, churches, etc. These projects include land acquisition, housing,  social infrastructure, vocational and business training.

Houses are built with concrete blocks and structural steel reinforcement, glass shutter windows, metal doors, a patio, a perimeter fence that protects the house from erosion, and a cement tile floor.

Home improvements are intended to impact the qualitative deficit, allowing the gradual improvement of existing houses. A variety of alternatives are offered, including loans for risk mitigation build  projects, legalization of land ownership and any other financial needs related to housing improvement.

Over 4200 families are served every year through the different services Habitat for Humanity El Salvador provides. Although families come from different backgrounds and present different needs.

Come prepared for a full week of hard physical labor in a rural setting and a willingness to learn and interact with community members. We ask our teams to try to stay flexible in order to enjoy this experience to it’s fullest.

Meet the Team Leaders: Laura Libralato & Tessy Sagan

Hi  my name is Laura Libralato and I am delighted to be co-leading the build to Sonsonate, El Salvador. This will be my 6th Habitat Global Build, and first as a co-leader. I have had 5 extraordinary experiences in Kauai Hawaii, Braga Portugal, Charlottetown PEI, Santiago Chile and most recently Whitehorse, Yukon. Unique, rewarding, enriching and inspiring are words that come to mind to describe my Habitat experiences. Thank you Jimmy Carter! (he inspired me years ago as a teenager and again when I heard about his concept and dream of Habitat for Humanity.)   I am an active person participating in road cycling, skiing (on snow and on the water), years of dragon boat competing, hiking at high elevation and spending time on the water in a kayak or SUP. Having been around kids and teens as a 31year veteran in education, one needs outlets.  Yoga is another staple in my life.    I’ve had a great transition from teaching, leading wellness and mental health workshops and searching for the next learning opportunity.  I can’t think of a better way to continue my transition then by way of lending a hand and offering a helping hand.  The opportunities provided to me on previous builds have helped to improve my construction skills and reaffirmed the importance of having a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard. I am looking forward to making new friends on the job site, in quiet conversations over a meal or morning coffee.

Hola, my name is Tessy Sagan and I live in Burlington, just west of Toronto.  My love of travel and exploration has led me to many places and adventures, including living in South America for 2 years.  I participated in my first build to Hungary in 2007 and since then I have been fortunate to lead builds to Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Portugal, Vancouver Island, Armenia and PEI.  Each experience has been unique and rewarding, combining the opportunity to travel to a new place and experience the culture, while meeting new people and making a difference in the lives of others. I am thrilled to be returning to build in El Salvador and I look forward to another great experience. No construction experience is required, just an open heart and an adventurous spirit.  If you have any questions about the build , please contact me at tsagan16@hotmail.com.  Or, you can apply now by using our on-line application.
