About Guatemala

Guatemala   is a country of striking features and a strong indigenous culture. It is mountainous, forested and dotted with Mayan ruins, lakes, volcanoes and orchids.

The indigenous Maya make up about half of the population.

Guatemala Faces a housing deficit of 1.8 million, leaving millions of families to live in poverty or without access to decent housing.

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala

Habitat Guatemala seeks to reduce this deficit through home construction or home improvements (latrines, concrete floors, roofing, improved stoves)

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala was founded in response to the earthquake of 1976.

It is estimated that one in six Guatemalans were left homeless when their homes, mostly adobe structures, were destroyed by the powerful quake. Habitat for Humanity came to Guatemala in an effort to help rebuild and prepare families for future natural disasters. Despite its painful origins Habitat Guatemala has become the largest and longest running international affiliate.

With over 100,000 housing solutions to date, Habitat Guatemala has contributed to the reduction of 4.6% of the country’s housing deficit, both qualitative and quantitative. Our commitment is to ensure all Guatemalans inhabit dignified and adequate housing.

Volunteers assist families as they construct news homes, smokeless stoves and latrines.

                                                           Team Leader: Ernie Fraser

Hello – my name is Ernie Fraser and have been involved with Global Village for many years. I have participated in 21 GV builds and been the team leader on 20 of those builds to places in Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, the US, Canada (Yukon, PEI and Iqaluit). These builds offer wonderful opportunities to provide a “hand up” to help a family improve their housing situation. On GV builds, participants have unique cross-cultural experiences, opportunities to work alongside local people and make new friends. I am excited to lead this build to Guatemala and hope you will join me in supporting a Guatemalan family.

Please contact me erniefraser@shaw.ca  if you would like to learn more about this build or apply by using our online application.
