Habitat Myanmar - Bago

Volunteer on a Global Village build and support communities improve their quality of life through decent and safe housing.

April 4th to 12th, 2020

Our team will work alongside local masons to help construct a new home in partnership with a local family. Habitat Myanmar projects in Bago are focused on building community impact through disaster resilient houses, clean water and safe sanitation solutions.

Habitat for Humanity Myanmar

Habitat for Humanity Myanmar was officially registered with the government of Myanmar in 2014 and since then has worked in both urban (Yangon) and rural (Bago) areas to address the housing need. Habitat Myanmar builds community impact by delivering affordable and safe housing while also improving access to clean water and sanitation. They also work to build societal impact by promoting local volunteerism and showcasing local programs. When Habitat first launched the project in the Thanatpin Township of Bago access to clean water, sanitation and housing were all in poor condition and negatively impacted the communities quality of life. The area often experiences flooding which would damage homes as well as wash sewage into the water systems leading to negative health impacts. Therefore, Habitat aims to increase resiliency of communities through improved access to water and sanitation facilities, improved hygiene and sanitation knowledge and practices as well as identification of best best practices for disaster risk reduction. By June 2019, the project has delivered 95 flood-resilient bamboo homes, 60 of which have a rainwater collection system, 350 household toilets, improved school latrines, a public toilet, renovated community ponds and 2 pilot village water treatment system. Volunteers will arrive in the capital of Yangon and travel 3 hours to Bago and each day will travel to the village.

Team Leader

Hi! My name is Claudine and I'm an early childhood educator who's passionate about traveling. I've been to Australia, Iceland, Costa Rica, France, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and several other countries. I also lived in an RV for a few months in Vancouver, BC.

I travel slowly, taking time to meet with people and really connect to their culture. This way, I feel you can really learn from these communities and come back home with a sense of change. I can't wait to build with you!!

I used to be an architectural project manager. I had a feeling the human contact was missing in my job so I decided on a career change. In this stage of my life, I had plenty of time to travel slowly, leaving for several months at a time. Taking part in Habitat builds is a way for me to keep connected with my hold construction career as well as connecting to my nomad spirit while having an actual job.

Please feel free to contact me at gagnonclaudine1@gmail.com to have more info about the build or submit your application online.
