Habitat Dominican Republic -

Samana

Join this Global Village team helping build safe and decent shelter for vulnerable populations in the Dominican Republic

June 20 - 28, 2020

This team will work with local masons and volunteers to build safe, decent housing with families in Samana, Dominican Republic. They will also have opportunities to build relationships with communities from another culture, and help provide a decent place to live, improving the living conditions of low- income families through access to housing.

Habitat for Humanity in the Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, the housing deficit exceeds 1.2 million housing units, of which about 60 percent is qualitative (UNDP 2010). This means that the number of inadequate houses is greater than the number of families without homes. This figure is growing annually by an average of 50,000 to 60,000 homes.

Nationally, the housing production system involves families and communities in building their own homes. The high cost of construction services and low income of families do not allow them to have access to formal means of construction, aggravating the quality and safety of homes.

Habitat Dominican Republic contributes to the country in improving the life conditions of the families that are part of the qualitative and quantitative housing deficit. This is achieved through the creation of programs that facilitate access to micro financing for housing purposes to low-income families with technical assistance in construction and creating financial education and disaster risk programs that support and contribute to building the stability, security and self- reliance families need.

Meet the Team Leader: Michael MacDonald

Hi my name is Michael MacDonald and I will be your team leader on this  Dominican Republic experience.

I have been involved with Habitat since 2010.  This will be my  seventh build and sixth as a team leader.  Previous builds include  Portugal, El Salvador, Trinidad, Costa Rica, Honduras and Fiji.  I have also traveled extensively  and led a mission to Chile on a community build.

The Dominican Republic has always interested me, I can think of nothing better than sharing a build experience here with a group of people that want to make a difference  in helping a family in this country.   I consider it an honor and  I look forward to meeting you and working with you.

No previous construction experience is necessary, there will be a place on the team for all experience levels.  If you are flexible, caring, adventurous, don’t mind hard work and getting dirty, and if you are looking forward to meeting a great family, some fantastic people, and creating memories for a lifetime then  please join this  team.

Please feel free to contact me at mikeg.macdonald@hotmail.com if you would like to learn more about this build or apply on line using our on-line application.
